Are there any risks in taking Bifidobacterium?

Research has shown that Bifidobacterium can be safely used by most adults and children for up to a year. It has also been used with babies who are seriously ill for up to eight months without harmful effects. A few people have reported digestive upsets associated with using Bifidobacterium, such as gas and a feeling of being bloated. In severely immunocompromised patients, it is possible that this bacterium may become pathogenic, or able to cause disease. A few people may be allergic to Bifidobacterium and should watch for side effects that may include chest pains, breathing problems, itching and hives. Call 911 for labored breathing, chest pain or swelling of the mouth, tongue, lips or throat. Call your doctor or go to the emergency room for hives, itching or a rash.
