Can fish oil prevent arrhythmia?


Some studies suggest fish oil can help prevent arrhythmia. Arrhythmia is when the heart beats faster, slower, or irregularly. A ventricular arrhythmia is when the heart beats too rapidly. During a regular heartbeat, electrical pulses cause the heart muscle to contract and beat. These electrical pulses follow a specific pathway through the heart and are regulated by a natural pacemaker. Fish oil contains fatty acids that regulate electrical currents, and may help stabilize electrical pulses in the heart, especially ones that cause ventricular arrhythmia. The American Heart Association currently recommends four 3-ounce servings of oily fish weekly. Fish oil supplement capsules are a safe alternative. While more research is still needed, regular ingestion of fish oil may significantly reduce the risk for ventricular arrhythmia.
