What are the side effects of oxytocin injection?

An anaphylactic (life threatening) allergic reaction of receiving oxytocin injection can cause rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, making it difficult to breathe. Other common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and more powerful contractions of the uterus. Your doctor should be aware of these side effects and take the necessary steps to reduce them. Other serious side effects include:

  • blood clotting issues
  • subarachnoid hemorrhage
  • irregular heart rate
  • hypertensive episodes
  • excessive bleeding following delivery
  • ruptured uterus
  • pooling of blood in the pelvis

Your baby might have:

  • bleeding of the eye
  • irregular heart rate
  • slow heart rate
  • seizures
  • permanent brain damage
  • jaundice

Fetal death has been reported with the use of oxytocin injection.
