Before receiving DaTscan to help diagnose Parkinson's disease in brain scans, you should know that it contains iodine and emits low levels of radiation. People who are allergic to iodine should not take DaTscan. If you're allergic to iodine, you could develop a rash, hives, swelling of the face and trouble breathing after receiving DaTscan.

Before receiving DaTscan, you should also be given potassium supplements to keep your thyroid gland from taking up the radioactive iodine in DaTscan.

Be sure to drink extra water before and after the injection. It's important to urinate frequently to help your body eliminate the drug and its radiation quickly.
