Sodium iodide I 131, also known by the brand name Iodotope, is a drug available only by prescription. It is also known as radioactive iodine or radio iodide. It is used to treat certain kinds of thyroid cancer as well as a hyperactive thyroid gland. For hyperactive thyroid, the radiation damages part of the thyroid, which slows its hormone production down to more normal levels. For thyroid cancer, large doses of radio iodide are used after surgery to destroy any leftover cancer in the thyroid or surrounding tissue. It is available in the form of capsules and solutions.
