Is iohexol safe for children?

There are certain risks involved for children receiving iohexol. For example, there is a risk of dehydration and kidney failure in young children, especially if the child is dehydrated, has diabetes or a pre-existing kidney disorder. Also, a child may have a previously unrecognized allergy to the ingredients of iohexol, such as iodine. Children under one year of age or children who have the following conditions have an increased risk of severe side effects and should not be given iohexol: asthma; allergies; congestive heart failure; or serum creatinine greater than 1.5 mg. per dL. (a sign of kidney damage that is measured with a blood test).
