Oxytocin is produced naturally by the body and caused the uterus to contract when it goes into labor. Pitocin is the name of the manmade medicine that is like your body’s own oxytocin and will also cause your uterus to contract. It is used when there is a need to induce your labor or if your own contractions are not strong enough and maybe need a little help to make them stronger. These contractions will efface or thin your cervix and help it to open or dilate. Eventually these contractions will also push the baby down the birth canal and out into the world and into your arms

Oxytocin induces labor by stimulating the uterus to contract. Contractions of the uterus begin the process of childbirth. They cause the cervix to dilate for childbirth and move the baby out of the mother’s body.
