How does oxytocin induce an abortion?

Oxytocin is used to clear out the uterus when a fetus has been miscarried, but the uterus has not emptied. The medical definition of “abortion” refers to an exit of the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta from the uterus before a pregnancy is at term for delivery. Miscarriages are considered spontaneous abortions. If a miscarriage occurs, but the fetus and placenta aren’t expelled from the uterus, or are only partially expelled, oxytocin can be used to stimulate the muscles of the uterus to contract and push them out of the uterus.
