How does barium sulfate work?

Barium sulfate is used to coat the lining of either the stomach, intestines or esophagus (the tube that connects the mouth and stomach). This coating allows an x-ray or CT scan to produce a clearer image of the diseased or damaged tissue. CT stands for computed tomography and can include a CAT scan or a CT scan. These are scans that use a computer to put together the x-ray images to create more of a multi-dimensional image.
