How does diabetes affect other illnesses?

Diabetes can worsen other illnesses, especially cardiovascular disease. If you have been diagnosed with diabetes, and have a personal or family history of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks or blood vessel disease, you need to be especially vigilant about following your diabetes treatment plan. Type 2 diabetes can lead to many other illnesses and health problems, particularly if uncontrolled. In addition to cardiovascular disease, the most common are kidney failure, blindness, foot problems and stroke. Unmanaged type 2 diabetes during pregnancy also increases the risk of complications for both the mother and baby.

Talk to your doctor about your medical history if you have been diagnosed with diabetes.
