What are the side effects of hydroquinone 4% cream?

While using hydroquinone 4% cream, you may experience burning, stinging, itching, irritation in the treated areas or develop a rash, acne, blisters or skin bumps. You might also notice red lines or blood vessels becoming more noticeable in treated areas. If these side effects do not go away or get worse, contact your doctor. Also, let your doctor know right away if you experience any of the following side effects, as they may be signs of a medical emergency:

  • signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives or an itchy rash, swelling around the mouth or face
  • chest tightness and difficulty breathing
  • if the stinging, burning or irritation becomes severe or if your skin starts to crack or ooze
  • if you notice increased hair growth or inflamed hair follicles
  • if your skin becomes discolored
  • if you experience irritation around your eyes, nose or mouth

You should also contact your doctor right away if you notice that your skin has a blue-black coloration.
