How effective are direct vasodilators?

Donna Hill Howes, RN
Family Practitioner

Minoxidil is more potent than hydralazine. It is effective for more than 75% of people whose blood pressure has not responded to other drug treatment.

Minoxidil, combined with a diuretic and an adrenergic blocker, may be effective for some people with severe high blood pressure and kidney disease. Caution is advised for people with severe kidney impairment.
