Restylane and Perlane are soft-tissue fillers used to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles around the nose and mouth. The active ingredient is a synthetic form of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a sugar found in human skin that forms part of the matrix holding skin cells together. It is also a component in collagen. These products attract water like a sponge, filling and plumping the tissue. Perlane contains more hyaluronic acid and therefore works better for filling deep lines, while Restylane is used in fine lines or in thin-skinned people. One injection is needed for 6 to 12 months of effectiveness, depending on the patient and the area being treated.
