Although depression cannot be diagnosed with a simple blood test, it has been linked to memory problems and abnormalities in the brain - specifically, abnormalities in the hippocampus. The hippocampus plays a role in spatial memory.

A video game that tests your spatial memory may be used to diagnose your depression. The game is based on scenes from the 3-D-game Duke Nukem.

The game requires you to navigate a virtual town and find certain landmarks within a specific period of time. Research showed that depressed participants found their way to 2.4 landmarks, on average, while the control group found 3.8 landmarks in the same amount of time.

The greater the level of depression, the fewer the landmarks were found.
