What should I know about yellow tongue?


Yellow tongue is a yellow discoloration of your tongue usually caused by bacterial growth on the tongue, but sometimes caused by liver or gall bladder problems. Yellow tongue is usually a temporary, harmless problem, and is often an early sign of another harmless disorder known as black, hairy tongue.

You can usually treat yellow tongue at home by gently brushing your tongue with a solution that is 1 part hydrogen peroxide and 5 parts water. Rinse your mouth with plain water afterward.

Quitting smoking and increasing the amount of fiber in your diet may help reduce the growth of bacteria in your mouth that causes yellow tongue.
