Black hairy tongue isn't a symptom of another condition. It is sometimes caused by taking antibiotics to treat an infection, but usually black hairy tongue is caused by poor oral hygiene or using tobacco products. People with HIV are more likely to get black hairy tongue, but having black hairy tongue isn't a symptom of HIV infection.
