How effective are crowns?

Crowns and onlays are effective to provide a more secure restoration than "just a filling" in that they surround the tooth and cover the cusps to act as a type to splint to help protect the tooth from fracturing. At the same time they often are used to improve esthetics. Actually, for some patients this may seem like the primary function; however, the crown is still serving a vital functional purpose.

Do crowns ever require replacement? Yes, and for a variety of reasons including: recurrent decay, wear, chipping, recession resulting in unaesthetic visibility of the crown margin and changes in shade of surrounding teeth. The list goes on.

Even though crowns may need to be replaced, they often last for extended periods of time with proper care -- both professional and at home. Also, as previously noted, crowns help to preserve weak fracture-prone teeth, which otherwise may break and become non-fixable which would result in extraction.
