Are preservatives in skin-care products necessary?

Dr. Mehmet Oz, MD

Cosmetic manufacturers add preservatives to skin-care products for several reasons. Preservatives prevent bacteria and fungus from growing in a product container. They also protect cosmetic products from the damaging effects of light and air.

Unfortunately, some preservatives may irritate the skin. However, preservative-free skin care products may become contaminated with bacteria, which could cause an infection.

If you can't tolerate skin-care products with preservatives, ask a dermatologist (a doctor who treats skin problems) to recommend brands that may be safe for you.
