When should I go to the emergency room if I have diabetes?

If you have diabetes, call 911 or go to the hospital emergency room if:

You have these signs of very high blood sugar:

  • A fruity smell on your breath
  • Severe thirst or hunger
  • Extreme tiredness
  • Stomach pain or body ache

You have these signs of very low blood sugar:

  • You feel dizzy or think you might pass out
  • You feel like you are fading away or you can't think well
