Many plastic surgeons do not perform hair transplants because the procedure is tedious and, frankly, boring. Nonsurgeons have filled the void. Chains of hair transplant clinics advertise heavily and act like factories, with "surgeons" who have often not completed any surgical residency. Technicians perform much of the operation. They cut up the hairs and even plant them into the scalp. In most states, performing a procedure in this manner is technically illegal, since by law the surgeon must be in the operating room supervising all aspects.
