What are the risks of cheek implant surgery?

Arthur W. Perry, MD
Plastic Surgery
Like other implants, cheek implants can become infected. If this happens, they will need to be removed. Cheek implants are harder to position than chin implants and are more likely to be placed too high, too low, or off to the side. Since these implants are paired, they must be perfectly symmetrical in order to look good. The cheek implant is placed very close to the nerve that supplies sensation to the cheek, upper lip, and nose. If this nerve is injured, an annoying sensation is experienced until it grows back. Worse, the nerves that supply the muscles of the upper lip and cheek may be injured during the operation, resulting in either weakness or paralysis. Needless to say, this is a potentially devastating complication. Fortunately, when it does occur, it is usually temporary.
