What is the American Society of Plastic Surgeons?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery
The American Society of Plastic Surgeons "is the largest plastic surgery specialty organization in the world". It was established back in 1931 in order to help the public choose qualified surgeons when considering plastic and reconstructive surgery. When considering either reconstructive or cosmetic surgical procedures, American Society of Plastic Surgery members are physicians with more than 6 years of surgical training, at least 3 years in plastic surgery. Their experience and training allow them to be qualified to perform both elective and reconstructive surgical procedures in the safest manner possible.

The Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation was developed as a research and philanthropic arm of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons to enhance public service activities, as well as support research through a variety of grants and volunteer activities to help the less fortunate. I am proud to be a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeon, as well as donate annually to the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation.

Devoted to the specialty of plastic surgery, the Board was founded in 1931. According to the Society's website, "The mission of ASPS is to advance quality care to plastic surgery patients by encouraging high standards of training, ethics, physician practice and research in plastic surgery". The society is "an active advocate for patient safety: requiring its members to operate in accredited surgical facilities that have passed rigorous external review of equipment and staffing". The society's research-oriented arm is known as the Plastic Surgery Educational Foundation (PSEF), founded in 1948. The PSEF provides research grants, organizes international volunteer programs, and sponsors visiting professor programs. This and additional information is available on the Society's website at www.plasticsurgery.org.
