When should I call my doctor if my baby has a congenital heart defect?

If your baby has a congenital heart defect, you should call your doctor immediately if he or she has:
  • difficulty breathing
  • poor feeding
  • blue color around the mouth
  • unexplained fever
  • decreased activity level
You should definitely see your doctor if you suspect a heart birth defect in your child. In some cases, the defect may be serious and require treatment such as surgery or a heart transplant. Even a minor heart defect may require lifelong monitoring to ensure that other health issues do not arise.
