Complex sleep apnea develops in people who already have obstructive sleep apnea and have used the treatment CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure). With obstructive sleep apnea, the throat or upper airway keeps closing during sleep, making breathing difficult. When the person uses CPAP, the obstruction is gone, but they develop complex sleep apnea instead.
