How do I use stretch bands to exercise?

You can use bands in many ways. Start simple; Stand in a comfortable yoga mountain pose. Hold your band in front of you with your hands close together. Inhale your arms up and exhale as you slowly stretch to your right feeling the stretch through your left side, hold for a breath inhale back up and exhale to the left side feeling the stretch on your right side. Do three on each side gradually increasing the stretch and continuing the exhale a little longer. Performance tip: When your hands are overhead prior to stretching and throughout the stretch try to feel your body as if it is pressed between two panes of glass.  

You can use stretch (elastic) bands in several ways to help improve overall fitness. Elastic bands allow you to move in multiple directions through a full range of motion and combine several exercises seamlessly. Elastic bands and tubing also allow you to perform resisted exercises that mimic sport-specific movements such as a golf swing or tennis forehand.

Elastic bands come in a variety of colors, shapes, and thicknesses. A color-coding system is used to identify differences in the thickness of rubber. Elastic resistance works like a rubber band—the greater the thickness of the tubing, the more resistant it will be to stretch, thus greater force will be required to stretch it.

One of the greatest advantages of elastic resistance over free weights is its low cost and portability. Elastic resistance bands are lightweight and can be taken anywhere.
