What cardio machines are best for cross training?

Cross training is a very effective way to train your cardiovascular system. When using cardio machines you should look for equipment that will give you a lot of variety and will challenge as many muscle groups as possible. For example, changing from a run on a treadmill to more leg strengthening like what you get from a bike could be a good place to start. For most runners, if they try a bike the first thing they say is that their “legs burn." This means they don’t have good leg strength and need to use the bike to achieve this. Other equipment that should be in the mix is anything that will have you using both the upper and lower body. Cardiovascular exercise is designed for the heart and lungs but we can’t forget the benefits it has on the muscular systems. By using the upper body as well as the lower body, you are not only adding additional stress to your cardiovascular system because of the additional workload, but also improving your upper-body strength endurance. Cross training can be done by changing the exercise equipment you train every day or you can even help reduce the boredom of exercise by changing the cardio equipment every five minutes during your 30-minute workout. Take about a one minute break to change equipment and to give your body a rest before moving to the next piece of equipment and resuming your intensity.

The best way to train for cross training would be to create a circuit of exercises that will challenge your entire body. You can go from a treadmill to some dumbells and then hop on the bike and immediatley follow with a few squat thrust and so forth. Always aim to challenge your muscular and cardiovascular endurance. If you have a rower in your mist you should involve that in the circuit as well.
