What factors affect my prognosis with colon cancer?

Your prognosis with colon cancer is affected by the stage of your cancer. Colorectal cancer is staged based on depth of tumor invasion, lymph node involvement or distant spread (metastasis). These factors can predict long term survival. If the cancer is contained in the colon without lymph node involvement or distant metastasis the chance for cure is greater than 90 percent. Unlike many other cancers, if colorectal cancer is caught early, people can be cured and live a normal life.

The prognosis (chance of recovery) depends on the following:

The stage of the cancer (whether the cancer is in the inner lining of the colon only, involves the whole colon, or has spread to other places in the body). Whether the cancer has blocked or created a hole in the colon. The blood levels of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA; a substance in the blood that may be increased when cancer is present) before treatment begins. Whether the cancer has recurred. The patient's general health.

This answer is based on source information from National Cancer Institute.
