What is a polypectomy?

A polypectomy is the removal of a polyp. This is frequently done during colonoscopy and flexible sigmoidoscopy.

A polypectomy is a surgical procedure in which a polyp is removed via a snare inserted into the colonoscope. If a polyp is found, the snare can easily grab the polyp and remove it. If a polyp is found low enough in the rectum, the polyp can be operated on through the rectum. A polypectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that often eliminates the need for abdominal surgery.

Polypectomy is the removal of an abnormal growth (polyp) in the GI tract. Polyps can occur in many sites throughout the GI tract, but typically a polypectomy refers to colon polyps. Multiple types of colon polyps exist, and the most common type (tubular adenoma) can grow and develop mutations which may turn into cancer over time if not removed. There are different techniques and various instruments employed by the physician, but the goal of all screening colonoscopies is to find and successfully remove polyps via polypectomy to prevent them from turning into cancer over time.

Some early colon cancers (stage 0 and some early stage I tumors) or polyps can be removed by surgery through a colonoscope. When this is done, the surgeon does not have to cut into the abdomen. For a polypectomy, the cancer is removed as part of the polyp, which is cut at its stalk (the area that resembles the stem of a mushroom). Local excision removes superficial cancers and a small amount of nearby tissue.

A polypectomy is a minimally invasive technique that is used during a colonoscopy to remove a polyp, a growth on the lining of your colon. Forceps or a snare is used to remove the polyp which is then biopsied to determine if it is benign or precancerous.
