Does colon cleansing (colonics) help prevent colon cancer?

There is no medical evidence that colon cleansing (such as a colonic) prevents colon cancer. The causes of colon cancer are not well known and the causes are likely dependent on a number of factors. The best way to prevent colon cancer is to get the recommended screenings.

Colon cleansing does not help prevent colon cancer. Although colon cleansing is the necessary preparation for a colonoscopy, there is no evidence that it, in itself, will prevent colon cancer. The best prevention is catching polyps through a colonoscopy and having them removed before they become cancerous. To lower your risk of developing colon or rectal cancer, you should also eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grain foods and limit the amount of red and processed meat in your diet.
