What are the risks of taking guaifenesin?

    Guaifenesin can be risky to use under the following circumstances:
    • if you are pregnant or breastfeeding (Talk to your doctor about risks versus benefits before use.)
    • for children under four years of age (Care should be taken in giving this medication to older children, through 11 years of age.) Death can occur from the misuse of cough and cold medicines in very young children.
    • when mixed with other nonprescription cough and cold medications, an overdose can occur
    • when driving or operating heavy machinery (Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how your body will react to to guaifenesin.)
