Modafinil (Provigil) is used to treat sleepiness in people with certain sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, obstructive sleep apnea, and shift work sleep disorder. Modafinil is classified as a federally-controlled substance because it has the potential to be mentally or physically addictive, especially in people who use it long-term or take a higher dosage. It can cause changes in mood, thinking, and feeling. If you take modafinil and stop suddenly, you may experience withdrawal symptoms. You should also tell your doctor if you have history of drug abuse before beginning modafinil. Talk to your doctor before stopping and starting modafinil. Your doctor may draw down your dosage slowly before stopping completely. Take only what your doctor prescribed and no more. Follow directions given to you by your pharmacist carefully.

Modafinil (Provigil) is typically taken in the morning with or without food. It is used to treat sleepiness in people with certain sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder. Shift workers usually take it an hour before the start of their shift. It can also be used to treat sleepiness caused by obstructive sleep apnea, but it does not replace the CPAP breathing machine used during sleep or good sleep hygiene.

Modafinil is classified as a federally controlled substance because it can be habit-forming. Take it exactly as directed by the doctor.

Critics of Ritalin claim that is overprescribed. However, that is debatable. The Journal of the American Medical Association published a study in 1998 that found no evidence of widespread overprescription of Ritalin.

But other authorities, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, have found some worrying trends. A study released in 2007 found that children were twice as likely to be on Ritalin if their parents were divorced. Worldwide, ADHD prescriptions has increased 300 percent since 1993, and in 2008, an Australian doctor asserted that 30 percent of ADHD cases in Australia are improperly diagnosed and that even in legitimate cases of ADHD, medication frequently is not required.

We live in a fast-paced, quick fix society and teachers and parents are often over worked and stressed out. The idea of a pill that can calm a child is very appealing. When we stop to take a look at the gifts of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), it requires us to re-work how we set up classrooms for children, how involved we need to be in children's everyday lives, how tolerant we have to be of each other in relationships. That is much more difficult than giving a pill to someone.

The following medications may interact with caffeine: beta blockers, calcium supplements, ciprofloxacin, enoxacin, norfloxacin, oral contraceptives, disulfiram, erythromycin, lithium, mexiletine and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs). Since caffeine is a stimulant, taking it with other stimulants may cause an overdose resulting in an increased chance of severe side effects. Stimulants to avoid with caffeine include: bronchodilators, other caffeine products, cimetidine, ketoconazole, aminophylline, dyphylline, oxtriphylline, theobromine and theophylline. Barbiturates and hydantoins may counteract the intended effects of caffeine. Smoking tobacco while taking caffeine may make caffeine less effective.

Caffeine, a central nervous system stimulant, is an out-of-favor treatment for overdose of alcohol and narcotic pain relievers. It is currently used to treat neonatal apnea. Caffeine is also widely used in "over-the-counter" beverages to relieve drowsiness and fatigue. Caffeine works by targeting and stimulating the areas of the brain that control breathing and other basic functions. The term "alkaloid" refers to the fact that it is a naturally occurring chemical compound containing numerous nitrogen molecules. Caffeine is isolated fron the coffee bean.
