What is ciprofloxacin?

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic, which is a type of drug that destroys bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is used to treat and prevent infections. Your doctor may prescribe ciprofloxacin if you have a urinary tract, bronchitis, skin, bone or joint infection. However, because ciprofloxacin and similar drugs may cause serious side effects affecting the muscles, tendons, joints and nervous system, the FDA has recommended that they be used for common infections only when there are no other good treatment options.
