Before using Ciloxan ophthalmic solution, you should know that this medication can cause an allergic reaction that can be serious. Tell your doctor if you're allergic to ciprofloxacin or any other antibiotics from the quinolone family. An allergic reaction to Ciloxan can cause cardiovascular collapse and unconsciousness. Also, tell your doctor about any prescription or over-the-counter medications you're taking, as some may interact with Ciloxan. This drug also can encourage the growth of new bacteria if used over a prolonged period. It may cause blurry vision. If this happens, do not drive and try to avoid rubbing or touching your eyes. If you wear contact lenses, you should not wear them while using Ciloxan. It has not been proven to be safe for infants and children under two years of age.

1 AnswerStacy Wiegman, PharmD , Pharmacy, answeredOral ciprofloxacin should be taken two hours before or six hours after taking any antacid that has magnesium, aluminum or calcium. It can be taken two hours before or six hours after sucralfate, didanosine or any vitamins and supplements that contain iron, zinc or calcium. Some of these may bind to ciprofloxacin and prevent absorption, thus reducing its effectiveness. Ciprofloxacin tablets should be taken whole and never crushed or chewed. Do not stop taking it until all tablets are taken even if you begin feeling better. Stopping your medication early can result in your infection not being cured. Also, missing doses can also decrease the effectiveness of the treatment and make the bacteria more resistant in the future. However, do not take more than two doses per day, even if you miss a dose.
Make sure that your doctor knows if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, since the risks are not known to women or to a fetus or nursing child. If you have ever had a seizure disorder, asthma, liver problems or kidney problems, tell your doctor before taking this medication. Drink plenty of fluids while taking this medication, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. This drug may make your skin more sensitive to light and prone to sunburn. This drug has been linked to a nerve condition called peripheral neuropathy. If you develop any nerve symptoms, such as numbness or weakness, tell your doctor right away. Convulsions and other central nervous system side effects have also been reported with this drug. Because of these and other side effects, the FDA recommends that ciprofloxacin and similar antibiotics be used for common infections (like sinusitis, bronchitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections) only when there are no other treatment options. -
1 AnswerStacy Wiegman, PharmD , Pharmacy, answeredPeople who have had asthma, epilepsy or other seizure disorders, kidney problems or liver problems will need to exercise extreme caution when taking ciprofloxacin. Do not take ciprofloxacin if you are pregnant, plan to be pregnant or are breastfeeding, since the effects are not known. If you are allergic to quinolone antibiotics, do not take ciprofloxacin.
Because ciprofloxacin and similar drugs may cause serious side effects affecting the muscles, tendons, joints and nervous system, the FDA has recommended that they be used for common infections (such as bronchitis, sinusitis and uncomplicated urinary tract infections) only when there are no other good treatment options.

1 AnswerStacy Wiegman, PharmD , Pharmacy, answeredCiprofloxacin can be taken with or without food. Do not take this drug at the same time you drink milk or any juices with added calcium, unless you take the milk or juice with a main meal. If you take antacids with magnesium, aluminum or calcium; didanosine; sucralfate; or any vitamins or supplements that contain calcium, iron or zinc, you will need to take ciprofloxacin two hours before or six hours after taking these substances, since they may bind to it and prevent its absorption. Be certain to tell your doctor about any medications, including over-the-counter drugs, vitamins or supplements, that you may be taking. Limit your caffeine intake, since this has been shown to possibly interfere with this drug. Some other medications that have been shown to possibly interact with ciprofloxacin include: cyclosporine, glyburide, methotrexate, multivalent cation-containing products, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (not aspirin), omeprozale, phenytoin, probenecid, theophylline and warfarin.

1 AnswerStacy Wiegman, PharmD , Pharmacy, answeredThe most common side effects of oral ciprofloxacin include: dizziness or headaches, diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain or the development of a vaginal yeast infection. Talk to your doctor if these side effects persist or worsen. Although rare, some people have an allergic reaction to quinolone antibiotics. If you develop a rash, hives, swelling of the face and throat or find you have difficulty breathing, stop taking the drug immediately and seek medical attention. You also should try to avoid excessive exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light, since you may become sensitive to sunlight and ultraviolet light while taking this drug. Some people also have been known to experience an inflammation of the tendons and peripheral neuropathy. If you feel a burning sensation, tingling, numbness, muscle weakness, sensitivity to touch, pain, swelling or rupture of a tendon, call your doctor immediately. Tell your doctor if you have had convulsions or seizures in the past, since some people have reported having convulsions in connection with taking this drug. On very rare occasions, central nervous system disorders, such as confusion, tremors, hallucinations and depression, have occurred. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking ciprofloxacin HCl immediately and seek medical attention. As with any medication, an overdose can result in serious side effects. Contact your doctor immediately if you suspect an overdose.
