Why is cholesterol fractionated?

Some doctors advocate fractionating cholesterol. This means looking at the subtypes of the cholesterol, for example, big particles and little particles. When you break down LDL, there are large LDL particles and small LDL particles. The small LDL particles are what seep into the arteries and cause heart disease. Some people may have mildly elevated LDL, but when you fractionate it, or break it up, it mostly comprises the large type. The large type generally does not cause heart disease or heart attacks.
