What is involved in surgery for choanal atresia?

Surgery for choanal atresia can be performed two ways. Transpalatal surgery is performed by way of the mouth, while transnasal surgery takes place by accessing the area through the nose. In the surgery, the blockage of the nasal passages is removed. This is all usually performed while your baby is under anesthesia. Following surgery a stent may be placed in the airway temporarily to keep the airway open during healing.
