Maternity care interventions for Mom during Antepartum (Early care after conception) phase includes:
- Avoid alcohol (may lead to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome in infant) and smoking (may cause constriction of blood vessels)
- Get adequate rest (6 to 8 hrs. sleep per night recommended)
- Consult your MD before starting an exercise routine (in absence of medical or obstetric problems 30 min/ moderate exercise is acceptable)
- Keep MD appointments (early intervention is best)!
- Take your medication as prescribed by your MD, including prenatal vitamins and iron, and informing him/her of ALL meds including herbal remedies to determine safety of administration during pregnancy
- Obtain a nutritional assessment by your MD with instructions on proper weight gain per month based on body mass index (BMI) and your pre-pregnancy weight
