What do I need to know about caring for someone with celiac disease?

Caring for someone with celiac disease requires feeding them a restricted diet, making sure they get recommended nutrients, and seeing their doctor on a regular basis. The most important part of treating celiac disease is eating a diet that is gluten-free and making sure that any other products they use are gluten-free. Gluten is found in any food that has wheat, barley or rye and can be found in lip products, certain medications, and even play dough.

People affected with celiac disease have an inability to absorb nutrients while they have gluten in their diet, so it is important to help them replenish nutrients that they failed to absorb while they were eating gluten. It is also important to take the person your caring for to the doctor regularly to have their iron and vitamin levels checked. With children you need to make sure there growth is being monitored and that the celiac disease is under control.
