What is the most important imaging test to evaluate carotid artery disease?

James F. Benenati, MD
Diagnostic Radiology
Duplex Ultrasound is the primary imaging modality to make the diagnosis. It is relatively simple and reproducible, and it can be highly accurate. It is critical, however, that the Duplex exam be performed by trained vascular technologists and interpreted by trained physicians.  The best way to ensure this is to be certain that the exam is done in an accredited vascular laboratory. Patients can ask the testing facility if they are accredited in carotid artery Duplex testing. There are two primary accrediting bodies: The IAC and the ACR.
