What are sentinel lymph nodes?

A sentinel lymph node is the lymph node located closest to a tumor, and the first to receive drainage from it. By examining the fluid in the sentinel lymph nodes, doctors can determine whether cancer cells have spread beyond the tumor and might potentially travel to other parts of the body.
