Why do children ingest more fire retardants than adults?

Children are believed to ingest significantly more fire retardant chemicals than their mothers. This is because they spend more time on the floor amid house dust contaminated by fire retardant chemicals that have migrated out of consumer products. In addition, they put their hands and objects -- toys, for example -- in their mouths more frequently than adults.

Oral exposure is not the only route. Children and adults may inhale small particles that fire retardants adhere to. Inhalation of vapors is also possible. However, the oral route is considered a key explanation for elevated exposure in children.
