What medications treat burning mouth syndrome (BMS)?

There are several different medications that can be used to treat burning mouth syndrome. This includes:

  • Antidepressants
  • Topical gels
  • Vitamins
  • Saliva stimulants.
Use of these medications or others should first be discussed with your dentist.
Assuming the local and systemic causes have been eliminated, it can be treated with topical gels that include an anti-inflammatory, an anesthetic, and a benzodiazepine like clonazepam. The literature shows and I have also had success with tobasco sauce.

For a systemic treatment clonazepam seems to provide the best success but there are other medications that have been used with less success like gabapentin.
Medications to treat burning mouth syndrome (BMS) vary depending on what's causing the problem. If your BMS is from oral thrush, for example, antifungal drugs will probably help. In many cases, however, doctors can't find a reason for BMS. When there's no known cause, drugs that treat depression and anxiety sometimes help. Clonazepam (Klonopin), a drug often used to treat seizures, can sometimes help when taken in lozenge form.

Depending on underlying conditions, medications such as clonazepam (Klonopin), and oral thrush medications, can be prescribed for burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Your doctor or dentist will perform tests and determine whether these drugs can help you. Burning mouth syndrome can be aggravated by stress. If anxiety and depression are causing stress, antidepressants may improve yours symptoms.
