Do bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets have side effects?

The side effects of bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets (Budeprion XL) range from very mild to life-threatening. Let your doctor know if any of the following less serious symptoms are bothering you:

  • nausea or vomiting
  • constipation
  • mild rash
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • drowsiness
  • dry mouth
  • weight loss
  • sweating
  • excitement
  • insomnia
  • disinterest in sex
  • shaking of any part of your body that you are unable to control

Speak to your doctor right away if you have any of the following potentially serious side effects:

  • pain in your muscles, joints, or chest
  • a fast, hard, or irregular heartbeat
  • fever
  • rash, blisters, hives, or itching
  • abnormal swelling of the feet, ankles, legs, hands, faces, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes
  • hoarseness
  • seizures
  • confusion
  • hallucinations
  • irrational fears
  • difficulty breathing or swallowing

If you have trouble breathing; swelling in the face, lips, tongue, or neck; an itchy rash; or hives, you may be allergic to the medication and should get immediate medical assistance.

Additionally, bupropion hydrochloride extended-release tablets can cause thoughts of suicide in the first days you are taking it. This effect is more common in people younger than 24 years old, but can be seen in adults as well. If you or your caregiver notices any of the following symptoms, you should contact your doctor right away:

  • thinking about hurting yourself or attempting to hurt yourself
  • worsening depression
  • restlessness
  • aggressiveness
  • anxiety
  • agitation
  • difficulty sleeping
  • panic attacks
  • irritability
  • acting without thinking
  • excessive excitement
