Are there any risks in taking bupropion?

People who take bupropion for depression may develop suicidal thoughts or thoughts of harming themselves. This is especially true of teenagers and anyone up to 24 years of age. Risk of suicidal thoughts or attempted suicide is greater if there is a family history of bipolar disorder or suicide. Bupropion can be passed to a nursing infant through breast milk; however, its effects on the infant are not known. Do not breastfeed if you are taking bupropion. Other risks include: severe side effects, such as seizures, confusion, interactions with other drugs, eye problems, hallucinations and psychotic episodes. Your doctor will weigh the risks versus the benefits of prescribing this medication.
