When don't bones heal by themselves?

The human body has a wonderful system to heal broken bones; in the case of some very severe injuries, though, a broken bone may not heal properly. It might not heal because the bone may have shattered or become infected. On the other hand, smoking or other health habits can prevent a bone from healing. A non-healing bone can be devastating for a person, because it causes disability and pain, and sometimes people can't walk, function or resume their lives.
