What is atelectasis?

Atelectasis is a breathing disorder that happens when a lung partially collapses. This can happen because of pressure on the outside of the lung or due to blockage of an airway. Someone may develop atelectasis if they have had anaesthesia, an object in the airway, mucus that is clogging the airway, or had help breathing, such as with a ventilator.
