How do I care for someone with a breathing disorder?

If you are caring for someone, keep in mind that there are many kinds of breathing disorders with different treatments, depending on the cause of the breathing disorder. Find out what the person has, because the care you give will depend on the disorder involved. You can care for someone with asthma by removing things that trigger asthma attacks from the environment. Keep an inhaler handy so they can self-medicate during an attack.

You can help someone with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) to quit smoking. Remind them that this important step will slow the progression. They may use an inhaler, too, and you can remind them to take their anti-inflammatory medication. They may also have to take an antibiotic if they have an infection.
