How effective is breast reduction?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is very effective in reducing both the signs of the breasts and alleviating the symptoms from the weight. Symptoms from bilateral breast hypertrophy include: back pain, neck pain, grooving along the shoulder blades, rashes under the folds, and occipital headaches. Enormous breasts called gigantomachia can lead to ulcers along the breast skin due to poor blood supply. Patients normally wear large supportive brasseries, failed conservative management including non-steroidal inflammatory medications, physical therapy and chiropractor treatments. Tissue is removed from both the medial and lateral breasts and sometimes the area above the nipple-areolar complex. This approach is referred to as the wise pattern technique or the anchor scar.
