What is immediate prosthetic breast reconstruction?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery

During immediate prosthetic breast reconstruction, both the mastectomy and the implant are immediately placed during the same surgical setting. The general surgeon will perform the mastectomy and the reconstructive surgeon will place the silicone prosthesis after. Normally, smaller implants will be used and placed under the muscle. These patients normally do not undergo radiation to the chest. The oncologist, general surgeon, and plastic surgeon will determine what is safe to be performed at a single setting.
