What's the best way to detect breast cancer early?

The best way to detect breast cancer early is by getting the recommended screening mammograms. The American Cancer Society says women should get annual mammograms beginning at age 45; after age 55, mammograms can be done every two years. If you have a family history of breast cancer, talk to your physician about starting annual mammograms earlier than that.

Women should also pay attention to how their breasts normally look and feel, and stay alert for any changes, such as lumps, dimpling of the skin or redness. Any changes should be checked out by a doctor promptly. Also, some doctors may recommend regular breast exams in the doctor's office.
