What activities will I need to avoid after breast implant surgery?

Stuart A. Linder, MD
Plastic Surgery
Some of the issues that we try to impress upon our patients during the postoperative visit after breast surgery are things that they can do to reduce postoperative bleeding or a possible hematoma (collection of blood in the tissues). We stress not only that the patient not take any aspirin or aspirin-type products, such as Advil, Motrin, Excedrin, or Ibuprofen, that will thin the blood and cause more bleeding, but also that the patient should not do any heavy lifting. While most people begin to feel better a short time after surgery, we stress that the patient refrain from lifting for a full three to four weeks after surgery. Excessive lifting or straining may tear the muscle or cause an artery or vein to open, resulting in a hematoma or collection of blood, which may require additional surgery to repair.

We also stress that you refrain from smoking for at least two weeks prior to surgery and two months after, and cease the use of all alcoholic beverages. This will help the blood flow and promote healing, while decreasing the risk of drug interactions. These rules have greatly reduced our incidence of bleeding and infection, the two most common complications of any surgical procedure.
